Creek to Bay Cleanup Poised to Set Records PDF Print E-mail

April 20, 2010 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – With Earth Day only two days away, I Love A Clean San Diego is poised to set records at the 8th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday April 24th from 9am – 12noon. While 3,500 volunteers have already committed to combating the litter problem facing our region, there is still time to join the effort. Interested participants are encouraged to visit the event website, www.creektobay.org to view the full list of cleanup sites and register for one of the largest environmental events of the year.

I Love A Clean San Diego estimates that volunteers will remove close to 200,000 pounds of trash on Saturday, the weight of over 25 killer whales like local celebrity, Shamu. Volunteers will also engage in storm drain stenciling, tree planting, and other beautification activities at a handful of sites. In order to further the message of sustainability, volunteers will receive a reusable water bottle, branded with the phrase “Green Starts Here”. These bottles help to remind residents of simple, every day behavior changes that can make a positive impact on our environment.

The County of San Diego and the City of San Diego have taken the lead in supporting this year’s event through support from Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and Supervisor Greg Cox, as well as Think Blue – City of San Diego Storm Water Department. Close to 100% of San Diego County’s eighteen jurisdictions have committed to supporting the cleanup event, further corroborating the need for this effort.

After a recent stint volunteering, a SANYO team member stated, “It really felt like we were making a difference, and it was great to see that everyone worked so hard together as a team.” There is still time to get involved in this year’s cleanup and feel that sense of accomplishment after donating your time to support the environment. Visit the website, www.creektobay.org for a complete list of cleanup sites. Show your love for a CLEAN San Diego by signing up today!
